We decided to settle in Linlithgow by simply driving through central Scotland and choosing the nicest place we found.  The decision was not a difficult one.

Linlithgow is a small town with great local schools and limited ability to expand.  A Royal Burgh, it was the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots.  James I constructed a royal palace atop a hill overlooking Linlithgow Loch in 1424, but sadly it was  destroyed by fire in 1746.  The ruins remain, however, a spectacular site.  Adjacent is St. Michael's Church, a well-preserved mediaeval church with a unique steel 'crown' steeple added in the 1960s.

The nearby House of Binns has faired in much better condition.  It is the family residence of the Dalyell family and the home of Tam Dalyell, founder of the Royal Scots Greys, who is reputed to have played cards with the Devil and roasted Covenanters in his oven at the property.  The house of Binns overlooks the Firth of Forth and keeps an impressive collection of peacocks.
